Show Signs of Helping Drunk Drivers to Sober Up
Since 1999, the National Drug Court Institute (NDCI),
the National Association of Drug Court Professionals (NADCP)
board committee on DWI/Drug Courts and a handful of DWI/Drug
Courts throughout the nation have led the charge to bring
to bear the successful drug court model dealing with
impaired driving. However, it wasn't until NDCI and NADCP
partnered with the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) and the Bureau of Justice
Assistance (BJA) on this issue that real momentum
occurred. An example of that momentum can be found in
today's Wall Street Journal where journalist Karen
Lundegaard highlights Judge Harvey Hoffman, presiding
judge of the Charlotte, Michigan DWI/Drug Court and
provides an in-depth look into the proliferation of DWI
Courts across the country. Based on the drug court model,
DWI Courts recognize the danger of drunk drivers as human
landmines who can kill entire families with a left turn.
Born out of this potential catastrophic reality of
dealing with repeat impaired drivers comes a court
response that not only seeks unparalleled community
supervision, but also effective treatment to address the
underlying substance abuse and addiction.
DUI / DWI laws vary from state to state, and cases
are handled differently in different areas within a
state. That's why it is so important to find an
experienced DUI defense lawyer near you.
