Former major league baseball player Jim Leyritz, who hit a pivotal home run for the New York Yankees in Game 4 of the 1996 World Series, has been jailed for failing to comply with the terms of his pretrial release in a DUI manslaughter case.

Leyritz, 45, was ordered to use an ignition interlock device and not to consume any alcohol at all as terms of his release.  He has reportedly driven after consuming alcohol four times since the device was installed in April 2008.

Leyritz’s attorney argued that his client didn’t understand the terms – he said Leyritz believed the device would shut his car off if he consumed too much alcohol.

Prosecutors allege that Leyritz was drunk when he ran a red light in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in Dec. 2007, killing another driver who investigators said was also under the influence.
