With November fast approaching, being nabbed for a DUI is a terrible situation for anyone running for political office.

This is just the case for Carmen Toft, a Planned Parenthood employee who is on the ballot for a District 10 House seat in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Toft was arrested on May 22nd for careless driving and a DUI. She reportedly hit a 7-year-old girl on a bike. However, no serious harm to the young cyclist has been reported.

Toft will be withdrawing from the race, although she cannot officially withdraw until after the June 5 primary.

You don’t need to be a politician to have your life ruined by a South Dakota DUI. Having a DUI conviction on your record can hamper your efforts for employment or the bank’s approval for a loan. You need to fight your charges. Contact an experienced South Dakota DUI attorney today.

If you’re going out and about this Memorial Day Weekend, be prepared to see a TON of police patrolling and holding sobriety checkpoints.

Don’t drink and drive.

If you do get stopped at a DUI checkpoint, be as polite as possible to the police officer. Remember that when you get pulled over you do not need to answer any questions other than stating your name and handing the officer your paperwork. The only other requirement is to take a BAC test. The field sobriety test is voluntary.

A Des Moines driver was arrested for a DUI. However, cops noticed his passengers to be a bit out of the ordinary.

Jerald Reiter was arrested for driving under the influence and he had his pet zebra and parrot in the vehicle with him. Apparently his pets, Pee Wee and Izzy respectively, enjoy going for rides. Reiter was off to a bar that he thought allowed pets. When the bar informed him they didn’t allow “non-party animals”, the police were immediately called.

Reiter’s BAC level was twice the legal limit.

More importantly, none of the animals seemed to be mistreated or harmed.

Lost actor Matthew Fox was arrested for driving under the influence in Bend, Oregon on Friday.  As of now, few details regarding his arrest have been released. Fox was released from jail shortly after his arrest.

In Oregon, a DUI is often referred to DUII or driving under the influence of intoxicants. The consequences of an Oregon DUII arrest include jail or community service, expensive fines and suspension of one’s driver’s license.

It is important to note that Oregon is one of the few states where plea-bargaining is not allowed. This means that an Oregon DUI charge cannot be reduced to reckless driving or exhibition of speed. However, Oregon does have a DUI Diversion program that allows eligible individuals to avoid a conviction if they agree to fully participate in the year-long drug and alcohol rehabilitation and education program.
