How many times growing up were you told driving is a privilege, not a right? Chances are numerous.  The question is why people abuse that privilege. Whether you are a teen texting in Los Angeles or someone who needs a DUI lawyer in Harrisburg, driving isn’t always fun and games.

Distracted Driving

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimated that 32,310 people died in motor vehicle crashes in 2011. Who knows how many of these deaths could have been prevented if it weren’t for distracted driving. If you are lucky enough to have a passenger with you, let them handle the distractions.

One of the most common forms of distracted driving comes from texting or talking on your cell phone.  Many believe only teens are culprits; however that is not always the case. When using a cell phone while driving, the chances of you swerving out of your lane and into another increase significantly. You are also lowering your reaction time to that of a 70-year-old.

Other forms of distracted driving include eating and drinking. If you are traveling and need to eat, then you should always stop the car first. Not only does this give you a chance to stretch your legs, it also allows you to regroup so you can focus better. When planning a long trip, program your GPS before you head out.  You wouldn’t want to be distracted by reprogramming your sidekick. Running late for work? Don’t comb your hair or put on makeup in the car either. Chances are you may not make it to work at all.

Drunk Driving

Even if you do get pulled over for distracted driving, you may only receive a ticket. However, if you are pulled over for drunk driving, you’ll need to find yourself a good lawyer, especially if you cause an accident.  According to Mothers against Drunk Driving (MADD), in 2010 alone, 10,228 people died of drunken driving crashes. This equates to one person every 52 minutes.

It doesn’t matter what your blood alcohol concentration (BAC) is; the younger you are, the higher the risk there is of being involved in a crash. Statistics for 2009 show that more than one out of three fatal crashes involved someone between the ages of 21 and 24 who had a BAC of .08% or higher.

If you end up going out and having a few too many drinks, have a sober friend drive you home, or call a cab. Distracted and drunk driving can be prevented.  If for some reason you abuse your driving privileges, there are people out there who can help you such as a DUI lawyer in Harrisburg or an attorney in Los Angeles. These are the people who can assist you with the trouble you got yourself into.
