grandma gets DUI

Some people visit their grandparents in a retirement home. We guess others visit their grandparents in jail.

A grandmother in Cook County, IL was convicted of a DUI for the seventh time this week. Jeannine Jenkins was arrested in the Chicago area when she was on her way from picking up her grandchild from a daycare center.

Jenkins has been convicted of a Class X felony. A Class X felony was established in Illinois and it typically includes extremely violent crimes such as armed robbery, treason, rape, sale of narcotics and other crimes that put others in significant danger. Sentences are often doubled for Class X felons without the opportunity for parole unless they exhibit good behavior and are not a threat to society.

In many states throughout the country, repeat DUI offenders are often charged with a felony. They are required to spend many years in jail and lose many of their rights such as their ability to vote or gain employment. If you’ve been arrested for a felony DUI, you need to hire a lawyer right away.

However, a misdemeanor DUI doesn’t mean you shouldn’t hire an attorney. Every DUI case warrants a skilled drunk driving defense attorney to look over the case and fight for you. If you’ve been arrested for a DUI, let 1800DUILaws.com help you find a skilled lawyer!

DUI Checkpoint in Chula Vista

Caution DUI Checkpoint

Although there were plenty of DUI checkpoints in California last weekend, don’t think the police aren’t going to be patrolling this weekend.

Police in Chula Vista will be holding a checkpoint within city limits this Saturday. It will begin at 6pm and last until 3am. The exact location of the checkpoint was undisclosed.

If you get stopped at the checkpoint, remember that the most important thing you can do is be respectful to the police. Do not answer any questions other than stating your name. Submit to a breathalyzer test, but inform the officer that your lawyer told you not to submit to a field sobriety test.

A field sobriety test includes walking in a straight line, standing on one leg and other physical and cognitive tests. A field sobriety test is a tactic police use to gain more evidence that you are under the influence. They are optional. The breathalyzer, however, is required as the police officer must get a BAC reading if they have any suspicion that you are under the influence.

Er… I guess this could be considered multi-tasking.

Luis Briones, of Albuquerque, NM, was arrested for a DUI, but apparently he was also engaging in sex while behind the wheel.

Police responded to a crash caused by Briones. When they found Briones, it was reported that he had one shoe on and his shorts were on inside-out. They also found a female passenger, who had been ejected from the vehicle, not wearing any clothes.

Luckily, no one experienced any serious injuries.

However, Briones did try to evade the police, by hiding behind a cactus. However, that didn’t turn out too fruitful. He was arrested for DWI, reckless driving and attempting to evade police.

If you get pulled over for a DUI, don’t attempt to run or evade the police. It can only make matters worse. Always cooperate with the police when you get pulled over so you don’t face any additional charges.

Breathalyzer on Your Smartphone?!

alcohoot

In the near future, you may be able to test your BAC on your own. Three developers have created an app and device called Alcohoot which plugs into your smartphone and can measure your blood alcohol content.

Not only did creators Jonathan Ofir, Ben Biron and Max Koeppel want to make a smartphone breathalyzer accurate, but they also wanted to make it aesthetically pleasing. After all, it would probably be embarrassing to pull out a big, bulky breathalyzer in the middle of a night out!

Therefore, device is very small and can fit into your pocket. It comes in a variety of colors and the plug is retractable.

Yes, it doesn’t look like a breathalyzer you would normally expect to see. However, it does incorporate the same fuel-cell technology that leading breathalyzers use.

Not only does Alcohoot measure your BAC, it also keeps a log of your other tests. This can be helpful if you are trying to sober up and can help limit the amount you drink.

Furthermore, the Alcohoot is relatively cheap. It only costs $75! You can currently pre-order a device from GetAlcohoot.com and they will begin shipping this fall.
