The National Football League is partnering with the ride service, Uber, to curb the number of player drunk driving incidents.
As you probably know, the NFL has become notorious for a bunch of players getting arrested for drunk driving. In fact, the NFL Players Association Executive Director DeMaurice Smith stated that DUI incidents are one of the top safety issues among NFL players.
While the NFL has attempted to implement penalties for DUI arrests, such as player suspensions and alcohol screenings, this partnership aims to help prevent DUI arrests from even happening.
In a statement to reporters, Smith said, “We know that discipline certainly plays a part in changing behavior. But we really wanted to start this look at trying to do a better job by treating this as a public health and public safety issue. This partnership with Uber is something we believe meets that.”
Uber is a ride service that allows you to hail a ride, pay for it and tip your driver all via a Smartphone app. Uber uses GPS via your phone to locate its passengers. Users can see on their phones where the nearest Uber driver is located and how long it will take for the driver to arrive.
In their partnership with the NFL, the players will receive a $200 gift card toward Uber rides. Ah, yet another perk of being a professional athlete!
